Mackay’s DV Shame

Shocking new figures have revealed the full extent of the Domestic Violence scourge in Mackay, as pressure builds on the Labor Government to urgently fix the escalating problem.

New analysis of Queensland Police Service data has revealed a disturbing 140% increase in Domestic Violence Protection Order breaches since Labor came to power nearly a decade ago.

In the 12 months to December 2023, the number of breaches in Mackay and the Mackay Northern Beaches divisions reached 1332.

That’s an annual increase of nearly 17%.

Shadow Minister for the Prevention of Domestic, Family and Sexual Violence and Member for Whitsunday Amanda Camm said the drastic rise in breaches is extremely concerning.

“The Labor Government should be ashamed of these figures”. Ms Camm said.

“After eight years in office, and two major inquiries, the Labor Government have still not taken any action to improve the safety for women and children in our region.

Ms Camm stated that urgent reform was needed to raise awareness and education of Domestic Violence across the region and the Government needed to provide adequate funding to ensure this happened.

“Our local Domestic Violence support services are being increasingly stretched and our region requires an immediate increase in Government funding to help sustain these support systems for our community”, Ms Camm stated.

Ms Jules Thompson, from Broken Ballerina stated that demand for their service had increased dramatically over the last 12 months with increased caseloads and requests for assistance.

“Broken Ballerina doesn’t receive any ongoing or operational government funding and relies on grants and donations and fundraising efforts to be able to provide assistance and support to survivors of Domestic and Family Violence across Mackay and the Whitsundays. And with the increase in demand, it is getting more difficult for us, and other service providers to be able to support all those seeking assistance”, Ms Thompson stated.

Ms Camm said that it was time the Government were serious about reform and serious about protecting our vulnerable women and children.

“Announcements won’t make victims any safer. Only action will”.
