Member for Whitsunday Secures Island Inquiry

The Member for Whitsunday, Amanda Camm MP, has secured an inquiry into island resort management across the state.

“For too long the residents of Keswick Island have been neglected by the Queensland Labor Government.

“On the 22nd of June 2021, I travelled to Keswick Island to hear first-hand the issues affecting local residents in my electorate.

“This inquiry was long overdue to assess issues regarding leasing and ownership models, governance and regulation responsibilities, development approvals, public interest and rights.

“I have been a strong advocate for this since being elected and the Queensland Labor Government has finally agreed to a review.

“Across the Whitsunday electorate we have many islands including Brampton and Lindeman Island. In the past they have been significant tourism destinations.

“They have been abandoned by the Queensland Labor Government. These assets must be managed in the public interest for all Queenslanders.

“I encourage local Councils and island communities across the Whitsundays to have their say and make a submission to the committee.” Ms Camm said.

President of the Keswick Island Progress Association (KIPA), Craig Gilbert, welcomed the decision.

“Keswick Island Progress Association (KIPA) welcomes the announcement of a parliamentary committee inquiry into the economic and regulatory frameworks for Queensland island resorts.

“In particular, we are grateful for the support and advocacy from Amanda Camm right back to when she was on the Mackay Regional Council and recently as our elected Member of Parliament.” Mr Gilbert said.
