Youth Parliament Program for Local Leaders

The 26th YMCA Queensland Youth Parliament program has selected their Youth Members for 2021.

I would like to congratulate the three youth members of the Greater Whitsunday Region, including Dominic McCarthy as the Youth Member for Whitsunday, Nikkia Goodall as the Youth Member for Mackay, and Jessie Borg as the Youth Member for Mirani.

“I have spoken with each of these Youth Members and am looking forward to attending this weekend’s Launch Ceremony at Queensland Parliament House to meet other young leaders from across the state.

“This opportunity allows youth leaders to participate in a six-month program including being part of a committee to propose law reform, participating in community consultations and debating their Bill in a youth Parliament.

Each year, the YMCA Queensland Youth Parliament provides the opportunity for 93 young people aged 15-25 years to access this unique educational experience and be immersed in the Parliamentary process.

Youth Member for Mackay, Nikkia Goodall said: “The YMCA Youth Parliament is an incredible opportunity that I am fortunately able to participate in and there are countless aspects of the program that I'm looking forward to. I'd have to say, however, that I'm most excited about meeting so many like-minded youths and having the privilege to work alongside them. Also being able to create real change on projects that I'm passionate about and learning what it means to be a politician follow closely behind.

Youth Member for Whitsunday, Dominic McCarthy said: “I excited to be part of this opportunity and to contribute to policy and legislation. I am looking forward to participating in the sitting week later in the year where we will debate our bills, vote on motions, and speak on issues of importance. It will be fantastic to engage with other young leaders from across the state who are passionate about politics and government.

Youth Member for Mirani, Jessie Borg said: “I believe this experience as a whole is an amazing opportunity and is something to look forward to. Meeting new people, representing the electorate of Mirani and agricultural in general, learning about how the bill process works. These would be some things that I am extremely excited and looking forward to.
