Insurance Costs and Border Closures Continue to Hit Tourism Industry

The Member for Whitsunday, Amanda Camm MP, has renewed calls for tourism industry support that is targeted and rolled out immediately.

She was joined by the Deputy Leader of the Opposition, David Janetzki MP, in the Mackay and Whitsundays today, to listen to the sector about the impacts of border closures on region.

“Border closures continue to cause disruption to the Whitsundays, impacting small and family businesses and threatening their viability.

“As a heavily tourism-reliant region, the flow-on effects have been hurting the local economy and wider community.

“In addition, fixed cost insurance continues to hit the tourism industry, for both mainland and island operators. Many small business owners are unable to meet these costs and struggling to find alternate options.

“I call on the Palaszczuk Labor Government to provide further support to tourism in the Whitsundays and immediately deliver the required support packages.

“These businesses cannot wait weeks to complete lengthy application processes.

“This will ensure they can continue to provide their world-class tourism offering following the recovery.
